Apex Legends Cuts Steam Deck Support Amid Cheating Surge

EA and Respawn Entertainment have made a significant change to Apex Legends by discontinuing support for Linux OS, which includes the Steam Deck. This decision aims to combat rampant cheating, as the developers identified Linux as a major vector for various exploits. Although this may impact a limited number of players, EA believes it is necessary to enhance the competitive integrity of the game. Players using Linux will no longer be able to access Apex Legends, while those who can run Windows on their Steam Deck will still be able to play.

Apex Legends dropped support for Linux to combat cheats exploiting the operating system. The developers found it challenging to differentiate legitimate players from cheaters on Linux, prompting the decision to block access for this OS.

Apex Legends, launched in 2019, merges elements from the Titanfall universe into a free-to-play battle royale format. Renowned for its exciting characters and dynamic gameplay, Apex has continued to evolve through seasonal updates. Most recently, Season 22, titled "Shockwave," has been running, while EA has confirmed no plans for an Apex Legends 2, focusing instead on the ongoing development and improvements to the existing game. The title remains a popular choice among gamers, but issues with cheating persist, leading to this controversial support withdrawal.
