AMAZON TAPS BUMBLEBEE DIRECTOR FOR MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE MOVIE

May 02, 2024 3:08 PM

The long-awaited live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe is finally moving forward with Amazon MGM Studios championing the project. After a series of development delays, including a shutdown by Netflix last year, Mattel has teamed up with Amazon, hoping to replicate the surprise success that Barbie saw at the box office. The movie now has a release date of June 5, 2026, indicating a strong commitment to bringing He-Man to the silver screen.

Travis Knight, director of acclaimed films such as Kubo and the Two Strings and Bumblebee, has been confirmed to direct the new adaptation. The script is penned by Chris Butler, known for his work on ParaNorman and Kubo. The film's synopsis reveals a unique take on the classic tale, following a young Prince Adam, who after losing his Power Sword and landing on Earth, must return to Eternia to battle Skeletor and embrace his destiny as He-Man.

This upcoming film is unconnected to Netflix's animated sequel series and will forge its own path within the Masters of the Universe lore. Casting details remain in flux, with decisions expected soon to meet the targeted summer release in three years.

Masters of the Universe, often associated with the popular 1980s toy line by Mattel, He-Man, and the animated TV series, has had a significant impact on pop culture. The franchise's central character, He-Man, became an iconic figure symbolizing strength and justice, transcending the realm of children's entertainment to become a nostalgic figure for the generation that grew up with the original series. Its narrative of good vs. evil, magical powers, and transformation has continued to inspire various adaptations, including animated series, comic books, and an initial live-action movie in 1987 starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man.
