Miami Vice ’85: first images show Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler

What happened

The official Miami Vice ’85 account posted the first look at the film on October 12, 2026. In the images shared, Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler appear in costume, alongside the caption: “Michael B. Jordan is Tubbs. Austin Butler is Crockett. Miami Vice ’85 - now in production.” The post was shared through the film’s official X account and is the clearest confirmation in the available source.

That confirms Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Butler as James “Sonny” Crockett. The film is described in the source as a reboot of the classic TV series Miami Vice. The first images therefore not only reveal the lead roles, but also confirm that production has officially started. The source mentions two first photos, matching the first look posted on social media.

The reporting also links the project to Joseph Kosinski, who according to the source has been attached to the reboot since last year. That detail comes from coverage around the first images and is not presented as a separate studio announcement in the available information. A release date of May 19, 2028 is also mentioned, but in the source it appears as reported information rather than a standalone official Universal confirmation.

Alongside the leads, the reporting also names John Leguizamo and Walton Goggins. According to the source, Leguizamo was cast in September as the main villain, while Goggins was added as a second villain a few weeks later. Those casting details are also presented as reported information in the available source, not as separate studio updates.

Background

Miami Vice ’85 returns to the original Miami Vice series from the 1980s. The source describes the project as a film about “the glamour and corruption of mid-80's Miami” and says the production is inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the TV series. That ties the movie to the period and tone of the source material, without providing a full plot description yet.

The first look matters mainly because it makes the casting of the two lead characters visible. Ricardo Tubbs and James “Sonny” Crockett are the central names in the Miami Vice universe, and the official post names both characters explicitly. That makes the social media post the key concrete source for this update, alongside the reporting that summarizes the images.

The available information still leaves several points open. It is not confirmed in the source whether Joseph Kosinski is officially directing, or only attached to the project as a creative force. It is also unclear whether Universal has formally announced the full cast. The names John Leguizamo and Walton Goggins are mentioned in reporting, but without a separate studio statement in the provided source.

The release date also remains a reported detail in the available information. May 19, 2028 is cited in the reporting, but the source does not make clear whether this is already a final, official release date. For now, what is certain is that the film is in production, the first images have been shared, and Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are playing the lead roles.
