X-MEN '97 PRODUCER SPILLS ON RE-CREATING NOSTALGIC ANIMATION

Mar 19, 2024 7:20 PM

In exciting news for fans of the 1990s animated series, Marvel Studios is bringing the nostalgia back with the long-awaited continuation, X-Men '97. The new series, which will revive the classic hand-drawn style, is an homage to the original X-Men: The Animated Series. Executive Producer Brad Winderbaum revealed that the animation team deliberately set "false parameters" to replicate the aesthetic and storytelling techniques of the '90s. In adherence to the original, even the former directors and writers are on board to guide the authenticity of the project.

X-Men '97 will maintain the intricate character relationships that were central to its predecessor, including the notable love triangle between Wolverine, Cyclops, and Jean Grey—hinting at potential developments with a pregnant Jean Grey teased in the show. However, in a surprising off-screen twist, showrunner Beau DeMayo has been fired for undisclosed reasons right before the series premiere. Despite this setback, Winderbaum assures that the series will honor the X-Men legacy and is eager for fans to see the completed work. Fans can anticipate the premiere of the first two episodes on March 20, on Disney+.

How is X-Men '97 maintaining the look and feel of the original animated series?

X-Men '97 is using creative techniques to mimic the hand-drawn animation style of the '90s. The team is working within self-imposed constraints and has also collaborated with the directors and writers of the original series to ensure an authentic continuation of the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series.

X-Men: The Animated Series, which aired from 1992 to 1997, was a revolutionary show that introduced many young fans to the world of superheroes and comic book storylines. It dealt with mature themes and complex relationships, setting a standard for animated series at the time. Its influence has been long-standing, setting the stage for the modern superhero genre in both animation and live-action adaptations. X-Men '97 aims to bridge the gap between the original viewers and a new audience by preserving the essence that made the classic series so impactful.
