Who Will Succeed LARIAN in Baldur's Gate Universe

Apr 17, 2024 10:27 AM

In recent gaming news, Larian Studios, known for their critical success with Baldur's Gate 3, has expressed intentions to step away from the franchise and the broader Dungeons & Dragons universe. The game's publisher, Wizards of the Coast, is carefully considering potential partners to take on the challenge of producing a highly-anticipated Baldur's Gate 4, following the lauded third installment. While the search for a fitting successor is underway, the studio's withdrawal raises concerns over the upcoming project's capacity to meet high fan expectations. Senior VP at Wizards of the Coast, Eugene Evans, mentioned ongoing discussions with numerous possible collaborators but refrained from detailed projections regarding the next game's direction. Despite interest from voice actors in participating in future D&D projects, the decision on who will inherit the mantle and how they will shape the future of the Baldur's Gate series remains under wraps.

Who will develop Baldur's Gate 4 now that Larian Studios has stepped away?

Wizards of the Coast, the owners of the Dungeons & Dragons IP, are currently evaluating various potential development partners to take on the task of creating Baldur's Gate 4. However, no announcements have been made about which studio might be chosen for this responsibility.

Baldur's Gate 3 has been a landmark RPG for fans of the genre, bringing modern narrative depth and technical excellence to the beloved Dungeons & Dragons setting. Created by Larian Studios — the developers also known for their Divinity series — Baldur's Gate 3 was a return to a series that hadn't seen a mainline release since Baldur's Gate II in 2000. The game's focus on player choice, party-based tactical combat, and character-driven storytelling was both a homage to the original games and a bold step forward in role-playing game design. As Larian Studios moves away from Baldur’s Gate, they leave behind a legacy of reviving a classic series with newfound ingenuity and passion for the RPG genre.
