Ubisoft Execs Disband Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Team

Oct 23, 2024 9:57 AM

Ubisoft has reportedly disbanded the development team behind "Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown," diverting members to other projects with higher sales potential. Despite positive reviews, internal sales expectations for the game were not met, leading to this decision. The core development team had sought a sequel and further expansions post-DLC but faced resistance due to concerns about long-term sales impacts. Ubisoft reassured that there were no layoffs from this process, focusing instead on making the game accessible to more players, including a recent Steam launch and a Mac version slated for winter.

What does the disbanding of the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown team mean for the future of the franchise?

The disbanding may indicate a shift in Ubisoft's focus toward other projects that promise higher sales and profitability, potentially putting the Prince of Persia franchise on hold for the time being. However, Ubisoft has expressed intentions to continue exploring opportunities within the franchise in the future, suggesting that while the immediate prospects may be diminished, the Prince of Persia brand may not be entirely abandoned.

"Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown" is a modern entry in the long-standing franchise known for its action-adventure gameplay and time manipulation mechanics. This installment represents a blend of classic elements with the popular Metroidvania format, earning acclaim for its engaging features and intricate level design. Its reception, while generally positive, prompted discussions on its commercial performance, highlighting the industry's balancing act between creative aspirations and financial outcomes.
