The Crow Remake Flops Hard with Only $4.6 Million Debut

Aug 27, 2024 12:12 PM

The latest reboot of The Crow experienced a significant box office failure, earning only $4.6 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. and Canada, and an equal amount internationally, totaling under $10 million worldwide. With a production budget reported at $50 million, the film, featuring Bill Skarsgård and FKA Twigs, opened in eighth place, trailing behind other releases and anniversary re-releases. The original 1994 film, starring Brandon Lee, had a much stronger debut at $11.7 million, which would equate to approximately $35.5 million today when adjusted for inflation. Critics have given the new film mixed to negative reviews, with a mediocre rating of 5/10 from IGN.

Why did The Crow reboot fail to perform at the box office?

The Crow reboot's failure can be attributed to a combination of factors including tough competition from other films, mixed critical reviews, and perhaps a lack of strong audience interest compared to the original film's cult status.

The Crow is based on the graphic novel by James O'Barr and tells the story of Eric Draven, who seeks revenge after being resurrected following the brutal murder of himself and his fiancée. The original film is well-regarded, partly due to the tragic death of its star, Brandon Lee, during production, which has contributed to its enduring legacy in pop culture. As such, expectations were high for the 2024 adaptation, making its box office performance all the more disappointing for fans.
