Switch breaks record: longest-running Nintendo console

Jul 12, 2024 12:10 PM

The Nintendo Switch has now become the longest-lasting Nintendo home console, surpassing the Nintendo Entertainment System's record. With 2,688 days on the market, the Switch has no immediate successor in sight, solidifying its place in Nintendo history. The Switch is set to continue strong with upcoming titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Despite its aging hardware, Nintendo's president Shuntaro Furukawa has expressed confidence in the console’s sustained momentum, aiming to maintain robust sales. The company has also pledged to curb scalping issues by ensuring ample supply when the next-gen console, tentatively named “Switch 2,” launches, which will not be before April 2025. The Switch has sold over 141 million units and continues to be a pivotal product for Nintendo since its launch in March 2017.

When will the Nintendo Switch 2 be released?n

Nintendo has indicated that the Switch 2 will not arrive before April 2025. An official announcement is expected by March 31, 2025.

The Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017 as a hybrid console that functions both as a home console connected to a TV and as a portable handheld device. It has garnered significant popularity due to its versatility and a strong games library, including flagship titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This success continues as new titles and franchise expansions keep attracting players.
