Switch 2’s GameCube Emulation: Nintendo’s Secret Since 2017

Apr 09, 2025 2:00 PM

Nintendo has announced that the Switch 2 will feature official GameCube emulation as part of its enhanced game offerings, which comes nearly 24 years after the console's original launch. This new emulation will be included in the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service, allowing players to enjoy a selection of classic GameCube titles. Although Nintendo has had the technology to emulate these games since the launch of the Wii, it has taken until now for them to capitalize on this impressive library. Initially, three titles will be available, including fan-favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soul Calibur 2, with promises of improved resolution, faster loading times, and online multiplayer where applicable.

Switch 2's emulation approach enhances the native resolution to 1280x900 for these titles, significantly improving upon the original GameCube's 480p output. The games will also feature widescreen support and online multiplayer capabilities, a first for many GameCube titles. However, some limitations remain, including frame rate caps and potential performance issues compared to their original releases. This move greatly expands the Nintendo Switch 2's classic gaming library, making beloved titles more accessible after years of waiting.

What GameCube games are available on Switch 2?

The initial lineup includes The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, and Soul Calibur 2. There are also expectations of more classic titles joining the catalog as time progresses.

GameCube holds a cherished spot in gaming history, known for its unique design and innovative titles like Super Mario Sunshine and Luigi's Mansion. Despite its poor commercial performance compared to its competitors, it fostered a cult following and remains beloved for its innovative gameplay and vibrant roster of games. The Switch 2's introduction of GameCube titles is an exciting development for both nostalgic fans and newcomers to the franchise, providing a much-welcomed revival of classic gaming experiences.

Nice to see Nintendo finally dusting off the purple lunchbox’s greatest hits—F-Zero GX at higher res is gonna feel like a whole new adrenaline rush. Though, let’s be real, the real flex would’ve been dropping Eternal Darkness in the lineup to mess with a new generation.

Finally, Nintendo gives GameCube fans the love they deserve—better late than never, right Wind Waker in HD with online multiplayer sounds like a dream, but here’s hoping they iron out those frame rate quirks. Switch 2’s GameCube lineup is a solid start, but man, the real test is whether we’ll finally get Melee with rollback netcode. A gamer can dream
