Steam's Beta for Families includes Parental Controls, Game Sharing, and Bans for Cheating Siblings

Mar 18, 2024 8:38 PM

Valve has introduced a new beta feature called Steam Families that enhances its digital game distribution platform by providing account holders with parental controls, game sharing opportunities, and strict policies on cheating consequences. Steam Families allows up to five family members to be invited into a 'Steam Family,' where they can access shareable game libraries, provided the game developers have enabled this option. The parental controls within Steam Families offer a host of management tools, including the ability to monitor playtime, restrict purchases, manage access to the Steam Store, and control Friends Chat.

One significant point to note is that if one family member is caught cheating and banned from a shared game, all members of the Steam Family will also be banned from that game. The feature aims to bring more control and organization to family members' gaming experiences on Steam, expanding and centralizing the functions of the previously available Steam Family View and Family Sharing.

What are the risks of sharing my game library with family members on Steam Families?

Sharing your game library through Steam Families means that if a family member gets banned for cheating in a game, all members, including you, will be banned from playing that shared game. Therefore, you should be cautious about who you invite to your Steam Family.

Background information: Valve Corporation, the creators of the Steam platform, has been pivotal in shaping the digital distribution space for PC gaming. With Steam being a widely popular platform among PC gamers, it is known for continuous innovation, such as the originally introduced Steam Family Sharing in 2013, which allowed users to share their gaming libraries with close friends and family. Steam also offers features like big sales events, a community hub, and support for user-created content through the Steam Workshop.

Sharing your game library with family members on Steam Families poses the risk of getting banned from a game if one member is caught cheating. It's a cool feature, but definitely something to consider before inviting everyone to join your Steam Family

This new feature from Valve seems like a great way to share games with family members, but the shared ban consequences for cheating could be a bit risky. It's a cool addition for managing gaming experiences within families, but definitely something to keep an eye on.

Valve's new Steam Families feature brings more flexibility and control to game sharing, but the shared ban consequences for cheating are a definite risk to consider. It's a cool addition for family gaming, but definitely something to be mindful of when curating your Steam Family.
