SSX Spiritual Successor Was Once in Development

Feb 14, 2024 2:28 PM

Fans waiting for a new snowboarding game experience will be disheartened to hear that a spiritual successor to the popular SSX series was in development but has now been canceled. SuperNatural, a studio founded by key members from the original SSX development team, Steve Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre, had been working on a new title. This project was intended to be published by 2K, but for reasons not disclosed, the plug was pulled on the development. It remains unclear how far along the game had progressed before its cancellation.

What was the spiritual successor to SSX, and why was its development canceled?

The spiritual successor to SSX was an unnamed snowboarding video game being developed by SuperNatural, a studio founded by former SSX developers. The development was canceled by publisher 2K without a clear reason provided to the public.

The SSX series, first launched in 2000 on the PlayStation 2, garnered a loyal fan base with its exhilarating snowboarding gameplay and distinct arcade-style mechanics. The franchise has seen several entries, with the most recent installment released in 2012 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Although fans have been longing for a comeback, the cancellation of SuperNatural's project means they will have to wait longer for a new game that captures the adrenaline-fueled spirit of SSX.

Man, it's a bummer to hear that the spiritual successor to the SSX series got canceled. With the original developers at SuperNatural behind it, I was really looking forward to hitting the virtual slopes again. Hopefully, another studio picks up the idea and runs with it in the future.
