Warner Bros. is reportedly reconsidering its stance on direct-to-streaming releases, with talks to possibly move the anticipated Salem's Lot remake to Max. This comes after CEO David Zaslav previously announced the company was focusing solely on theatrical releases. The move, according to a source familiar with ongoing negotiations, is not a reflection of the film's quality but is due to the impact of the SAG-AFTRA strike on Max's content flow.
Several other unnamed films currently set for theater release are also rumored to be transitioning to Max. However, when asked about the change, a Warner Bros. spokesperson stated that “no decision has been made about the film’s future distribution plans”. Salem's Lot was initially announced for a 2022 release, then moved to April 21, 2023, before being removed from the company's release schedule altogether.
The Salem's Lot remake, directed by Gary Dauberman, retells the Stephen King novel about a writer who discovers that his hometown's residents are turning into vampires. Despite changes in its release date, viewers got a sneak peek at the film during CinemaCon 2022.
