Nintendo Confirms End of Splatoon 3 Updates Two Years Later

Sep 16, 2024 8:49 AM

Nintendo has announced that Splatoon 3, the popular team-based shooter on the Switch, will cease regular updates two years after its release. Despite the end of these updates, Nintendo reassured fans that the game will remain online, featuring seasonal events such as Splatoween and Frosty Fest. Weapon adjustments will continue to be made when necessary, and various in-game challenges will persist for the time being. Splatoon 3 continues to perform well commercially, with nearly 12 million copies sold as of March 2024. This announcement comes ahead of the anticipated reveal of Nintendo's next-generation console, commonly referred to as Switch 2, which may feature backward compatibility for Splatoon 3 among other enhancements.

What will happen to Splatoon 3 now that regular updates are ending?

Splatoon 3 will still remain playable with selected seasonal events continuing, and weapon adjustments will be made as needed. Players can expect to enjoy previously established events like Splatoween and Big Run for the foreseeable future.

Splatoon 3 is part of a beloved franchise known for its unique gameplay revolving around ink battles. Launched in September 2022, the game has garnered significant attention for its vibrant art style and engaging multiplayer modes. With the upcoming Switch 2, rumors suggest it will maintain compatibility with existing Nintendo titles, giving players the opportunity to enjoy Splatoon 3 on the next-gen hardware.
