Great news for all Star Trek: Prodigy fans! Once doomed, the show's second season has now secured a future on Netflix. Originally aired on Paramount, plans to discontinue the show and remove it from its platform had caused major uproar among its loyal audience.
The story circles around a bunch of young aliens who chance upon the abandoned Starfleet ship, USS Protostar. Not only do they have to figure out how to get the massive starship running, but they must also navigate an unknown course out of the Delta Quadrant, all under the guidance of an emergency training hologram, which interestingly, is Captain Janeway!
Fans' profound disappointment over the planned cancellation spurred a huge campaign, rallying behind the cause to save Star Trek: Prodigy. The support was so incredible that a "Save Star Trek Prodigy" banner even soared above Netflix's LA offices. This impressive display potentially played a big part in Netflix’s decision to take on the animated Star Trek series.
In a heartfelt joint statement, co-showrunners Dan and Kevin Hageman, along with executive producer Alex Kurtzman, expressed their gratitude towards the passionate fans who stood by the show and its communal ethos. They were thrilled to confirm that season two is in production and eager to share it with their global audience.
And it's not only the second season that's coming your way! The show's first season will also be available on Netflix later this year. The IGN review of Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 gave it a noteworthy 7/10, citing the return of Kate Mulgrew’s Hologram Kathryn Janeway as a highlight. Janeway's character provides wise counsel, teaching the new generations about Gene Roddenberry’s vision of inclusiveness and shared curiosity about star-studded expanses. Stay tuned for more updates on Star Trek: Prodigy!
