Microsoft Wants More Fallout: It's Time for a New Vegas from Obsidian

Apr 29, 2024 1:08 PM

Fans are eagerly anticipating the possibility of a Fallout: New Vegas sequel following the success of the Amazon series and the fact that the Fallout franchise is trending once again. With Fallout 4, Fallout 76, and the original games garnering attention, Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG series is more popular than ever. Despite this, a new Fallout installment may not be expected until 2030 or later.

In light of this, Microsoft, which owns both Bethesda and developer studio Obsidian Entertainment, is rumored to be considering ways to capitalize on Fallout's popularity sooner rather than later. Considering Bethesda's busy schedule with Starfield and The Elder Scrolls 6, and their historical reluctance to outsource the Fallout franchise, the chances for a new game seem slim within the current decade. However, with Obsidian also being a part of the Xbox Game Studios, and after their success with the original New Vegas, fans and insiders speculate on the likelihood of a Fallout: New Vegas 2.

Despite Obsidian's current projects, Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2, fans can't help but dream of what a New Vegas successor could be. Practical issues, development timelines, and the financial implications for Xbox Game Studios are all factors to be considered. The Fallout series represents a significant potential financial asset for Microsoft, and player demand for a new Fallout game remains high. Yet, it's unclear if Microsoft will shift its internal plans to make room for a new Fallout title any time soon.

Could Fallout: New Vegas 2 be in the works?

While the desire for a Fallout: New Vegas 2 is high among fans, the reality of it happening in the near future is uncertain. Bethesda has a full development slate, and Obsidian is busy with their own major projects. Unless Microsoft decides to reprioritize its projects, which is unlikely, the chances of seeing New Vegas 2 soon are relatively low.

Fallout: New Vegas, released in 2010 by Obsidian Entertainment, is set in a post-apocalyptic open world. It's widely praised for its writing, branching storylines, and deep role-playing mechanics. As a standalone game within the Fallout series, it offered a distinctive experience that many fans feel surpassed other entries in terms of narrative and choice. Fallout’s rich lore and the unique charm of New Vegas's setting have kept the game in favor among RPG enthusiasts even years after its release.
