LARIAN STUDIOS RULES OUT BALDUR'S GATE 3 DLC, EXPANSIONS, OR BALDUR'S GATE 4

Larian Studios, the developer behind the acclaimed title Baldur's Gate 3, made a surprising announcement at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) panel. Swen Vincke, the studio's founder, stated that they will not be producing any downloadable content (DLC), expansions, or a Baldur's Gate 4. Despite the success of Baldur's Gate 3, the studio intends to step away from the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, handing it back to the publisher, Wizards of the Coast. Instead of extending the current game, the studio had focused on releasing free major patches, including the addition of a playable epilogue. The team has also expressed an interest in providing "robust and cross-platform" mod support to facilitate community-created content.

Larian Studios, before working on Baldur's Gate 3, was known for the Divinity series, with Swen Vincke having hinted at the possibility of another Divinity entry in future projects. However, it remains uncertain who may take on the Baldur’s Gate franchise moving forward or if a fourth installment will be made by another developer. Baldur’s Gate 3 itself has been an enormous success, critically acclaimed and winning major awards, demonstrating the value of the IP to Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast.

While there's no confirmation on the immediate next project, Larian Studios has indicated a new entry in the Divinity series could be a possibility, with the studio founder, Swen Vincke, mentioning a sequel was on the horizon. It is suggested that Larian's forthcoming projects will be "different but familiar," leading to speculation that their future games might be related to the Divinity universe.
