Jan 02, 2024 8:27 PM

Jack Black is reportedly joining the Minecraft Movie cast as the character Steve, based on a Deadline report. This role marks a shift from villain to hero for Black, contrasting his portrayal of Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie. Black brings a familiar energy to the video game characters he's played, which includes both Bowser and Steve's inclusion in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The Minecraft Movie, directed by Jared Hess, is part of the surge in video game adaptations and has been in development since 2014. Production began in December 2023, with Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and possibly Jason Momoa completing the cast. The film is set for release on April 4, 2025, and contributes to an expanding roster of video game-related films like The Last of Us and Fallout.

When is the Minecraft Movie scheduled to release?

The Minecraft Movie is scheduled to release on April 4, 2025.

Minecraft, the game which the upcoming movie is based on, is a sandbox video game developed and published by Mojang. The game was created by Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language and released as a public alpha for personal computers in 2009 before officially releasing in November 2011, with Jens Bergensten taking over development. Minecraft has since become one of the best-selling video games of all time, with versions available for all major platforms and various spin-offs and merchandise. It's known for its blocky, procedurally-generated 3D world where players can mine resources, craft items, build structures, and survive against enemies or play in creative mode with unlimited resources.

Jack Black joining the Minecraft Movie as the quintessential everyman, Steve, feels like a perfect fit, with his unique blend of humor and heart potentially giving the blocky builder a voice fans can rally behind. If Black's crowd-pleasing turn as Bowser is anything to go by, his Steve could be the charismatic cornerstone needed to anchor the expansive, pixelated world of Minecraft on the big screen.

Jack Black's knack for breathing life into animated and CGI characters seems like a win for the Minecraft Movie—exciting to see him swing from Bowser's menace to Steve's blocky charm. As the film carves out its place in the growing mosaic of game adaptations, that 2025 release date can't come soon enough for both Minecraft devotees and fans of Jack's dynamic performances.

Jack Black's jump from playing the iconic baddie Bowser to the blocky hero Steve is the kind of cool versatility we love to see shaking up video game movies. It's gonna be rad to see if his comedic chops can bring some fresh life to Minecraft's open-world vibe on the big screen in 2025
