Fruit Ninja dev returns with deepsea horror roguelike

Jul 14, 2024 3:09 PM

Luke Muscat, the developer behind popular mobile games Fruit Ninja and Jetpack Joyride, is shifting gears with his new game, "Feed the Deep." This lovecraftian roguelike tasks players with exploring procedurally generated undersea caves filled with eldritch horrors. The game incorporates resource collection, upgrades, and navigation through perilous environments with limited oxygen and hostile wildlife. Muscat's new venture represents a significant departure from his previous arcade-style titles, embracing the complexity and replayability of the roguelike genre. "Feed the Deep" is set for a Q3 release on Steam, and Muscat has shared insights into its development through YouTube videos.

What is "Feed the Deep" about?

"Feed the Deep" is a lovecraftian roguelike game where players explore procedurally generated undersea caves, manage limited oxygen, collect resources, and face hostile wildlife, aiming to complete their mission within an ever-changing environment.

Jetpack Joyride, Luke Muscat's previous creation, is an endless runner mobile game where players control a character named Barry Steakfries as he steals a jetpack from a secret laboratory. Its success followed on the heels of Fruit Ninja, a simple yet addictive game where players swipe on their screens to slash flying fruits. Muscat's pivot to a darker and more complex genre with "Feed the Deep" highlights his versatility and willingness to explore new gaming frontiers.

Luke Muscat diving into the lovecraftian roguelike genre with Feed the Deep is a rad twist from his arcade days, and I’m stoked to see his take on darker, more complex gameplay. The idea of managing oxygen while facing eldritch horrors underwater sounds like a gnarly challenge—definitely one to watch for Q3 on Steam
