fortnite leaving samsung store but hitting other mobiles soon

Jul 25, 2024 8:58 PM

Epic Games has announced that Fortnite will be leaving the Samsung Galaxy Store in response to a new policy that blocks side-loading apps. CEO Tim Sweeney stated that this move is to protest Samsung’s anticompetitive actions, which hinder users from installing competing stores. Despite this, Epic plans to bring its games to other mobile storefronts, including the EU-exclusive AltStore, and soon launch the Epic Games Store app globally on Android and on iOS in the EU. This decision follows Epic's ongoing legal battles to retain more control over game distribution, particularly against app stores like Apple's and Google's, which take significant revenue cuts from developers.

Why is Fortnite leaving the Samsung Galaxy Store?

Fortnite is leaving the Samsung Galaxy Store because Samsung implemented a policy blocking side-loading apps, which Epic Games views as anticompetitive. Epic Games wants to ensure fair competition for all developers, leading to their decision to remove their games from the Samsung store in protest.

Fortnite, developed by Epic Games, has been a pivotal title not just in gaming culture but in high-stakes legal disputes surrounding app store fees and regulations. Launched in 2017, Fortnite's Battle Royale mode quickly became a phenomenon. With millions of active players, Epic has used the game's popularity to challenge large storefronts like Apple's App Store and Google Play, fighting against the standard 30% revenue cut imposed on developers.
