The team that runs the Grand Theft Auto 5 role-play server, FiveM, has issued a warning to users to avoid any content that might infringe on third-party intellectual property rights. This warning comes two months after GTA's owner Rockstar bought out Cfx.re, the organization behind FiveM and RedM, which are communities focused on role-playing within Rockstar's games.
The team from Cfx.re has specifically targeted in-game cars, advising users to avoid creating cars that are based on real-world models. In the past, some of the most popular servers were the ones that charged users for access to real-world model cars.
Cfx.re stated, "You must fully remove all real-world vehicles from your server. We cannot allow custom assets or mods that infringe third-party intellectual property (IP)." The team suggested the community design their own unique vehicles instead.
Users were also instructed not to import maps from GTA 4, Red Dead Redemption or other games into their servers. The community’s response to these restrictions have been mixed, with concerns that it might affect the popularity of the role-playing servers.
FiveM, even eight years after the release of GTA5, continues to host some of the biggest GTA role-playing servers, boasting thousands of players. These changes came just as Grand Theft Auto 6 is due to be announced, stirring speculations about Rockstar's plans for an in-game role-playing feature in GTA 6.
GTA 5 and GTA Online have consistently generated substantial revenue for their parent company Take-Two. The development of GTA 6 was confirmed by Rockstar last year, though no further details have been officially released. The game is expected to launch in fiscal year 2025 or 2026.
