First time connection of disk drive to new PlayStation 5 models requires internet

Oct 25, 2023 3:00 PM

For the first time, when connecting a disk drive to the new PlayStation 5 models, internet connection is required according to text on a Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 bundle of the new PlayStation 5. The device must connect to the internet before the disk drive functions. This applies to both the model that already comes with the disk drive and the model without it. This might be a protection against third-party hardware.

Online players are expressing their concerns about the future of the device. This requirement could lead to the disk drives no longer being connected once the servers of PlayStation go offline. Sony has yet to comment on this requirement.

The new PlayStation 5 models will be introduced in the market next month. The two new models are thirty percent smaller and have a storage capacity of 1 terabyte. The two replace the original PlayStation 5 models.
