First Look at DUNE: Awakening Reveals Extensive Footage

Mar 05, 2024 8:29 AM

Fans of the Dune universe can anticipate a closer look at the harsh desert planet of Arrakis with the newly revealed extended footage of Dune: Awakening. This survival MMO aims to immerse players in a gameplay experience steeped in the iconic elements of the Dune franchise, including the imperative to find and harvest the precious resource known as 'spice'. However, players will have to navigate the treacherous landscape, build shelters to protect against devastating sandstorms, and learn the ancient ways of traversing the sands to avoid the monstrous sandworms that lurk beneath. While riding the sandworms is not an option at launch, it's a feature that may be introduced in the future. Developed by Funcom with assistance from the Dutch studio Abstraction, Dune: Awakening is set to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on an unspecified date.

Is Dune: Awakening going to allow players to ride sandworms?

No, at launch, Dune: Awakening will not permit players to ride sandworms, although developers are open to potentially adding this feature later.

Dune: Awakening is not just another game set in the Dune universe; it is a unique take, blending the vast and storied lore from the books and adaptations with survival MMO mechanics. The setting of Arrakis is already rich with political intrigue, environmental challenges, and mystical elements, drawing from Frank Herbert's seminal science fiction novel 'Dune'. Given the novel's lasting influence and the recent revitalization of the Dune saga through Denis Villeneuve's film adaptation, the game aims to capitalize on both new and longtime fans' interest, allowing them to explore and influence the complex world of Dune firsthand.

Dune: Awakening sounds like a promising venture into the iconic Dune universe, blending survival MMO gameplay with the rich lore of Arrakis. The potential to explore the treacherous desert landscape and the intrigue of spice harvesting seems like a great way to immerse players in the world of Dune. And while I can't hop on a sandworm right out the gate, the idea of that possibility down the line has definitely piqued my interest.

Ah, Dune: Awakening looks like it's shaping up to be a real immersive experience, bringing the harsh survival elements of Arrakis to life in a way that's true to the iconic franchise. While I'm a bit disappointed that we won't be riding sandworms from the get-go, the potential for that feature in the future has me intrigued to see how the game evolves post-launch.
