DRAGON'S DOGMA 2 SMASHES CAPCOM STEAM RECORDS DESPITE MICROTRANSACTION CONTROVERSY

Mar 22, 2024 11:34 AM

Capcom's new release, Dragon's Dogma 2, has broken the company's record for the highest number of concurrent players on Steam with 184,724 gamers logging in on launch day. Despite this success, the game has ignited a fiery debate over its multitude of microtransactions. With 21 microtransactions ranging from $0.99 to $4.99, players can purchase various items such as the Explorer's Camping Kit, a one-use gaol key, a Portcrystal warp location marker, and Wakestones for reviving the dead. These in-game purchases have sparked controversy as they seem to ease specific challenging aspects of the game, particularly fast-travel, which is otherwise limited by the need for rare Ferrystones and expensive Portcrystals.

Moreover, the price tag of the base game, a $70 single-player RPG, further complicates the issue, with many questioning if a game of this cost should include such microtransactions. Some gamers defend the microtransaction system, stating that all the items can be earned through gameplay and are restricted to a single purchase each. Despite the initial 'mostly negative' Steam review rating, it has improved to 'mixed', with some negative reviews focusing explicitly on the microtransactions. On top of this, PC performance issues have been reported by players, which Capcom has linked to the CPU demands caused by in-game NPCs.

What do microtransactions in Dragon's Dogma 2 include and why are they controversial?

Microtransactions in Dragon's Dogma 2 offer convenience items like fast-travel Portcrystals, character appearance changes, and consumables for in-game progression. They are considered controversial due to their impact on game balance, the potential for a pay-to-win scenario in a full-priced single-player game, and the perceived reduction in the challenge and reward of natural gameplay progression.

Dragon's Dogma, the predecessor to Dragon's Dogma 2, was well received for its innovative Pawn system, open-world exploration, and unique combat mechanics. The original game cultivated a dedicated fanbase and its sequel has been highly anticipated. However, the inclusion of microtransactions has soured the release for some players, while others praise the gameplay and world design. Dragon's Dogma 2's reception will likely evolve as Capcom addresses feedback from its player community.
