In the lead-up to the release of Doom: The Dark Ages, players are expressing disappointment over the physical editions of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Reports indicate that the PS5 version contains only 85MB on the disc, while the Xbox variant holds around 342MB, both requiring substantial downloads of approximately 85GB to play. The controversy stems from the lack of clear communication about these requirements, coupled with similar complaints from earlier releases by Bethesda. Despite these issues, Doom: The Dark Ages has garnered critical acclaim for its gameplay and tech performance, with various reviews highlighting its fun and engaging experience.

What should players expect from Doom: The Dark Ages in terms of gameplay and performance?

Players can look forward to a fast-paced, classic Doom experience infused with a medieval twist. Reviews describe it as "brisk and playful," with advanced tech utilization under idTech 8, offering a visually stunning experience, particularly on current-gen consoles.

It’s wild how physical copies are basically just fancy coasters now, but hey, if the gameplay’s as smooth as they say, I’ll gladly rip and tear through those download times. At least id Tech 8 seems to be delivering the buttery performance Doom fans crave.

Physical editions becoming glorified download keys is a bummer, but at least the gameplay sounds like a blast—classic Doom chaos with a fresh coat of medieval paint. Here’s hoping id Software patches in some transparency (and maybe more data on the disc) for the next release.
