Disney Plus Launches Serious Password Sharing Crackdown in 2024

Aug 07, 2024 3:28 PM

Disney is intensifying its password sharing crackdown for Disney+ users across different households, effective September 2024. CEO Bob Iger confirmed that following a pilot program in June 2024, the company aims to implement this policy comprehensively. Iger indicated that there has been no backlash regarding the initial notifications sent to users. This initiative was first announced in August 2023, originally targeting a summer 2024 rollout, with ongoing developments focusing on technology enhancements to increase profitability. Beginning October 17, 2024, Disney+ will also see a price hike, with ad-free subscriptions rising to $15.99, reflecting a significant increase since its launch in 2019. This comes as the streaming service reports its first profitable quarter.

What changes will Disney+ make regarding password sharing?

Disney+ will implement a stricter password sharing policy beginning September 2024, requiring users to manage account access amongst different households. This change follows a preliminary initiative started in June 2024 aimed at tightening subscription controls.

Disney+ is a subscription-based streaming service launched in November 2019, offering a vast library of Disney films, series from Marvel and Star Wars, and National Geographic content. As competition in the streaming industry intensifies, Disney aims to enhance its revenue through operational adjustments and increased subscription fees.
