The upcoming Borderlands film adaptation, set for release on August 9, 2024, will take a flexible approach to its video game source material, according to director Eli Roth. In a recent discussion, Roth highlighted that while the film will feature the same cast of characters as the first game, it won't be a direct translation of the game's plot. Taking inspiration from Marvel's approach, the film will exist in its own canon, separate from that of the game series. Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford supported this direction, allowing the film to tell an independent story that will include numerous Easter eggs for fans.
Roth mentioned the challenges of making the movie during the COVID-19 pandemic and hinted at his excitement, promising more details next year. Meanwhile, Roth handed over a segment of the film reshoots to Deadpool's Tim Miller while he focused on his own project, a movie entitled Thanksgiving. The Borderlands movie has enlisted a high-profile cast, with stars such as Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Jamie Lee Curtis among others. Produced by Avi Arad and Erik Feig, it is expected to make waves in theaters under Lionsgate's banner in 2024.
The film's production progress and discussion points to a keen focus on aligning with fan expectations while still crafting an original cinematic experience. As the release date draws closer, more information will inevitably be shared, including a full interview with Eli Roth discussing both the Borderlands movie and his latest film, Thanksgiving.
