Cyberpunk 2077, a game developed by CD Projekt Red, has witnessed a significant increase in popularity after the release of its Update 2.0 and subsequent Phantom Liberty expansion. The game attracted nearly 250,000 concurrent players on Steam, the highest count since the game launched in December 2020.
Prior to the release of Phantom Liberty, the game had already soared to the eighth position on Steam's most played games list, due in large part to Update 2.0. This major upgrade introduced improved features such as a revamped perk system and advanced AI. It even outpaced renowned games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Rust.
Cyberpunk 2077 recorded a 24-hour peak of approximately 170,000 concurrent players on September 25, a day prior to the launch of the Phantom Liberty expansion. Titles such as Bethesda's Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Apex Legends, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive also had impressive players' numbers during the same period.
Interestingly, the spike in player engagement was observed the moment Update 2.0 dropped on September 21. A massive surge from about 18,000 users on September 20 to over 90,000 concurrent players the following day was recorded. This growth trend continued with 115,510 online players on September 22, 151,915 on September 23, and 169,711 on September 24.
Anticipation is high for the Phantom Liberty expansion, especially considering the positive critique it has garnered. IGN gave a 9/10 review and commended Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty for its remarkable transformation effect on the futuristic RPG game. This sentiment was echoed by the successful anime spin-off, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and its latest 2.0 Update.
