The upcoming city-building game Cities: Skylines 2 faces another delay as the developers, Colossal Order, push back the DLC Expansion Pass to prioritize fixes for the PC version of the game. The first Asset Pack, originally scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023, has been postponed to the first quarter of 2024. Similarly, subsequent Content Creator Packs are delayed to the second quarter of 2024. Colossal Order CEO, Mariina Hallikainen, issued an apology, emphasizing the need to ensure the core game is fully functional before releasing additional content.
The delay follows a postponement of official mod support and slowing down of patch updates. Having launched with mixed reviews due to performance issues and bugs, the team at Colossal Order has been actively working on improvements. Despite these challenges, Cities: Skylines 2 managed to achieve a significant player count on Steam at launch, hitting the top of the best-sellers list.
Notably, the console versions of the game for Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 have also seen delays, with a new release window set for the first half of 2024. Colossal Order and publisher Paradox Interactive have been transparent about needing additional time to ensure consistent quality and performance across all platforms. The need to adjust the game's minimum and recommended PC specs was attributed to the incorporation of next-generation features aimed at enhancing player experience.
While the delays may be disappointing to fans eager for new content, the commitment by Colossal Order to refine Cities: Skylines 2 before expanding its offerings showcases their dedication to delivering a game that meets the community's expectations and maintains its reputation for supporting robust modding capabilities. Players can expect continued updates and improvements as the developers work towards a stabilized and feature-rich urban simulation experience.
