CD Projekt Aims for a Transformation in Cyberpunk 2077 Like The Witcher
Nov 01, 2023 3:36 PMCD Projekt Red, the creator of the Cyberpunk 2077, plans to have the game's sequel, currently referred to as "Orion", mirror the evolution of The Witcher franchise. Igor Sarzyński, the narrative director, made comparisons in terms of how the Witcher series underwent significant changes with each new installment. CD Projekt Red hopes to achieve a similar level of development for the Cyberpunk franchise.
"Cyberpunk 2077," the company's first foray into the sci-fi genre, introduced new gameplay mechanics, tones, themes, and art directions. It was a learning curve, with some elements such as art, city design, and music immediately successful, while others, like NPC interactivity and character progression, took more time to perfect.
Though not much has been revealed about Orion, it is set to be directed by the same expansion director responsible for Cyberpunk 2077, Gabe Amatangelo. The key game styles - whether first or third-person, for example - are still being explored. CD Projekt Red plans to create an immersive experience by integrating the game elements more seamlessly.
With Orion's development begun, it still some years away from launch, as the company is currently focused on the next game in the "Witcher" sequence named "Polaris", anticipated to release in 2025. Orion will be developed in CD Project Red's new North American studios which are under construction.
The Investor Day presentation disclosed the commencement of conceptual design work for Orion. It also highlighted the successes of Cyberpunk 2077, which has sold over 25 million units, and announced the stepping down of CEO Adam Kiciński.
