Recently, Microsoft announced that user-created captures, including screenshots and videos on Xbox consoles, will only be stored on the Xbox Network for 90 days going forward, as opposed to being kept indefinitely. After the 90-day period, these captures will be permanently deleted.

The new policy entails that when a user makes a capture on their Xbox console, the content gets stored not only locally on their hardware, but also automatically sent to the Xbox Network, providing a backup that could be accessed on different Xbox consoles. But due to this change, come early 2024, the first of these captures will begin to vanish permanently.

However, Microsoft's statement also pointed out that users can manually make backups to preserve their captures long-term, by using an external hard drive or OneDrive. It's said to have been made easier to achieve this on an Xbox console — users just need to go to My Games & Apps > See all > Apps > Captures. From there, a 'Tell me more' button would lead them to an option to choose a backup location. Users can also choose to have their captures automatically sent to OneDrive for storage.
