Balatro Dev Slams AI Art, Claims It Harms All Artists

Mar 13, 2025 11:03 AM

Developer Locathunk of the game Balatro has addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding AI art, firmly stating that he does not support its use in his work. The discussion was sparked after a subreddit moderator indicated that AI-generated art would not be banned, leading fans to mistakenly believe that both the developer and publisher Playstack endorsed it. Clarifying his stance, Locathunk emphasized that he finds AI-generated art harmful to artists and confirmed that both he and Playstack oppose its integration into their community. Affected by this miscommunication, the moderator was removed, and the rules regarding AI art will be updated for clarity.

nWhy is AI art controversial in the gaming community?

The controversy stems from concerns about the ethical implications of AI art, such as its potential to undermine traditional artists by reducing demand for human-created works. Many believe it infringes on the creative rights of individuals and diminishes the authenticity of artistic expression in games.

It’s great to see Locathunk standing firm on supporting traditional artists, especially in a time when AI art feels like it’s creeping into every corner of gaming. This kind of clarity from a developer not only helps set a standard but also reassures fans that the heart of creativity in games is still very much human.

It’s refreshing to see a developer like Locathunk take a clear stance on AI art, especially when the gaming community is so divided on the issue. This kind of transparency not only builds trust with fans but also sets a strong example for how studios can navigate these ethical gray areas moving forward.
