Alien: Romulus Links Mysteriously to The Last of Us

Aug 26, 2024 10:17 AM

Alien: Romulus, directed by Fede Álvarez, has unveiled an intriguing link to the acclaimed HBO series The Last of Us. Álvarez disclosed that the character Kay, portrayed by Isabella Merced, draws inspiration from Dina, a character from The Last of Us Part 2. While writing the film, Álvarez mentioned he was influenced by Dina's storyline, particularly her pregnancy, which led him to incorporate a similar aspect into Kay’s character. This creative choice proved serendipitous as Merced has also been cast to play Dina in The Last of Us Season 2, set to air in 2025. Alien: Romulus is the latest installment in the iconic sci-fi franchise, focusing on a group of young space settlers encountering a terrifying extraterrestrial threat.

What is the connection between Alien: Romulus and The Last of Us?

The connection lies in the character Kay from Alien: Romulus, who was inspired by Dina from The Last of Us Part 2. Fede Álvarez, while writing the film, drew influence from Dina's storyline and incorporated a similar element of pregnancy into Kay’s character, which was further enriched by the casting of Isabella Merced.

Alien: Romulus expands the legendary Alien franchise, known for its tension-filled atmosphere and iconic creatures, a hallmark of sci-fi horror. Debuting in August 2024, the film explores the survival struggles of young colonizers as they confront classic elements of horror in deep space, reflecting a renewed interest in the franchise that remains impactful in both gaming and cinematic narratives.
