After 8 Years, MGS 5's Actress for Quiet Reflects on Sexuality Debate

Nov 01, 2023 1:00 PM

Stefanie Joosten, who played the character Quiet in Hideo Kojima's videogame "Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain," recently addressed the longstanding debate around the sexualisation of her character. Quiet wears minimal clothing despite being a military assassin, which led to controversy about the over-sexualisation of women in video games and media.

Joosten showed understanding of both sides of the argument. She respected the design choices made by Kojima and his team, acknowledging that video games often serve as a form of fantasy world. Yet, she also empathized with those opposed to Quiet's portrayal, acknowledging the growing demand for representation and diversity in video games.

In Metal Gear Solid 5, it is explained that Quiet wears so little due to severe injuries she suffered, restricting her to breathe or drink through her skin. However, critics didn't believe this justified her minimal attire, accusing the game's writers of using her as a selling point and objectifying her character.

Joosten sided with the critics, stating that she didn't believe the in-game reasons justified Quiet's scant attire and expressed her support for greater diversity in character representation. Despite this controversy, Metal Gear Solid 5 has become one of the most celebrated modern video games.
