5 years since Metroid Prime 4 reboot reveal by Nintendo

Jan 25, 2024 11:49 AM

It's been five years since Nintendo made the announcement that it was rebooting the development of Metroid Prime 4, igniting anticipation among fans for the next installment in the beloved franchise. Originally revealed at E3 2017 and previously under development with Bandai Namco, Nintendo decided to restart the project with Retro Studios, the team behind the original Metroid Prime games. This decision was based on the game not meeting Nintendo's standards for a series sequel. Despite the long silence since the reboot announcement, Metroid Prime 4 is still listed for the Nintendo Switch with a "To Be Announced" release window.

Amidst speculation, there is curiosity if Metroid Prime 4 will debut on the current Nintendo Switch, migrate to the forthcoming Switch 2, or perhaps release across both platforms. Nintendo Switch 2 is anticipated to be unveiled later in 2024, which could potentially align with Metroid Prime 4's launch. In the meantime, enthusiasts of the series had the opportunity to enjoy Metroid Prime Remastered, which served as an excellent interim release for fans awaiting the fourth chapter.

Is Metroid Prime 4 going to be released on the Nintendo Switch or Switch 2?

While Metroid Prime 4 is still officially listed for the Nintendo Switch, it's uncertain whether it will be released exclusively on this platform, especially with the Switch 2 launching later in the year. Nintendo has not confirmed if the game will be available on one or both consoles.

The original Metroid Prime is a critically acclaimed action-adventure game, developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo for the GameCube in 2002. It was the first 3D installment in the Metroid series, well-received for its atmospheric exploration and innovative gameplay blending first-person action with puzzle-solving. Its success led to two sequels, completing the Metroid Prime Trilogy. Fans have been eagerly waiting for Metroid Prime 4, which promises to continue the series' legacy on newer console generations.

Nintendo's decision to entrust Metroid Prime 4 back to Retro Studios shows their commitment to quality, and while the wait has been long, it reassures fans that the game will likely be a true successor to the beloved trilogy. The possibility of a cross-generational release with the upcoming Switch 2 might be an ace up Nintendo's sleeve, blending nostalgia with cutting-edge gaming for both new and returning fans.

Nintendo playing it close to the chest with Metroid Prime 4's platform release details has us all on the edge of our gaming chairs, huh I'm betting they'll go for a cross-gen move to keep both the current Switch loyalists and the early adopters of the new hardware happy.

Nintendo's strategic shuffle back to Retro Studios for Metroid Prime 4's development speaks volumes about their commitment to quality—a move that's got me both excited and a bit anxious about the end result. The suspense on whether we'll be playing it on our good ol' Switches or holding off for the next-gen upgrade is like waiting for that epic sequel cliffhanger resolution—you can't help but feel the hype
