World of Warcraft: Forever shows controller support in alpha at BlizzCon 2026
Blizzard showed a playable alpha demo of World of Warcraft: Forever with controller support at BlizzCon 2026. GameSpot's Jez Corden tested it.
- GameSpot reporter Jez Corden went hands-on with the build in a new Skyborne elf starting zone and said the controls felt surprisingly natural after 22 years of WoW on mouse and keyboard.
- The controller layout shown uses shoulder buttons, face buttons, the d-pad and triggers together for 28 buttons worth of navigation and abilities.
What happened
Blizzard showed a playable demo of World of Warcraft: Forever at BlizzCon 2026. In the trailer description, the project is presented as Blizzard’s next evolution of WoW Classic, with extra content and major changes. The naming is still a little unclear in coverage, though: “Forever” is used both as the project name and as a label for the build on display.
According to GameSpot’s hands-on preview, Jez Corden played the build himself and tested a new Skyborne elf starting zone. In this version, the demo was fully playable with a controller, but Blizzard presented the support as part of an alpha build. Corden says he has played WoW with mouse and keyboard for 22 years, yet still found the controller setup surprisingly intuitive.
The demo explanation also detailed how Blizzard mapped the inputs. Shoulder buttons are used to cycle through friendly or hostile NPCs, face buttons handle interaction and jumping, and the d-pad combined with face buttons is used for abilities and spells. Each trigger provides access to eight keybinds; together, both triggers add another eight keybinds, bringing the total to 28 available buttons when combined with the d-pad.

Background
GameSpot notes that Blizzard had previously offered bare-bones controller support for WoW, while players looking for a full controller experience often turned to unofficial add-ons such as ConsolePort. That context makes the BlizzCon demo notable, since Blizzard is now showing a much more extensive controller layout.
The sources do not yet make clear whether controller support in World of Warcraft: Forever is only available in the BlizzCon demo or also in a broader test build. Blizzard has also not confirmed when the feature might officially launch, or how much of the shown mapping and UI handling could still change. The available information does say the build was presented as alpha.
The exact status of the World of Warcraft: Forever name also remains unclear. In the trailer description, the term is used as a label for a new direction within WoW Classic, but GameSpot’s reporting treats it mainly as a project name for the build on display.
