Fortnite receives major changes and Overwatch skins

Fortnite, the popular battle royale game developed by Epic Games, is heading into an exciting period with a major update going live on 14 May 2026. The patch will not only bring a major revamp to Zero Build, but also a collaboration with Blizzard’s Overwatch, adding four iconic characters to Fortnite.

Zero Build revamp

The 14 May update will be the final major change in Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 2. Zero Build, which was introduced in 2022, is now getting a full overhaul. Key changes include:

• A new utility slot: Players will be able to choose a pocket item from a new invention system they receive at the start of each match. This item can include Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist grenades, or Shield Bubbles.
• Glider redeploy: Players will be able to use their gliders again when falling from height, adding a new layer to gameplay.
• Unlimited sprint: When equipped with a pickaxe, players will be able to sprint without limits.
• Fall damage changes: Players will no longer die from fall damage, though they can still be hurt by a fall.

These changes are meant to improve Zero Build gameplay and are being described as an experiment, meaning they may not become permanent depending on player feedback.

Overwatch collaboration

Alongside the Zero Build changes, Fortnite will also introduce four Overwatch characters. Tracer, D.Va, Genji, and Mercy will be available in the in-game shop. These skins will go on sale on 14 May, along with various cosmetics such as emotes and a glider. It could end up being the most expensive bundle in Fortnite history, as the current record holder cost 4,500 V-Bucks for the Solo Leveling bundle.

The collaboration will also bring new gameplay elements and a new themed area on Fortnite’s Sandy Strip map, inspired by Overwatch’s iconic King's Row.

Future expectations

The changes and new content arrive during an important stretch for Fortnite. The company has seen player numbers dip earlier this year, and these additions could help bring more players back. Chapter 7 Season 2 ends on 5 June 2026, and the Overwatch collaboration is expected to play a key role in the season’s closing live event, where the storylines come together.
