Civilization VII: Test of Time update transforms gameplay
Firaxis Games and 2K released the long-awaited Test of Time update for Sid Meier's Civilization VII on May 19, 2026. This is the most substantial update the 4X strategy game has received since launch in February. It rewrites how Civilization works and how victories are earned in ways that fundamentally change the game.
Key gameplay changes
At launch, Civilization VII introduced a notable shift from previous entries: players had to choose a new civilization every time they moved into a new age. That change divided the player community. The Test of Time update addresses this by introducing 'Time-Tested Civs', which carry over across age transitions.
That means instead of switching civilizations, players can add specific units or infrastructure from other civilizations to their toolkit. In addition, every civilization now has an 'apex age', where it is at its strongest. For players who prefer to switch civilizations, that option still remains, but it looks like Time-Tested Civs will quickly become the preferred approach.
New victory requirements
The update also removes the Legacy Path system, changing how victories are now achieved. Previously, players had to focus on one of four paths - cultural, military, scientific, or economic - to progress through the ages. With the Test of Time update, players now need to complete Triumphs across six attributes: cultural, diplomatic, economic, expansionist, militaristic, and scientific. This gives players more freedom in what they pursue, since victories are now largely decoupled from the Triumphs system.
Players can pursue military, cultural, economic, and scientific victories starting in the Exploration Age, depending on how well they are positioned against their rivals. These changes to Time-Tested Civs and the new victory requirements significantly alter the dynamics of Civilization VII, and may help win back older fans who were unhappy with the original gameplay changes.
Additions in the update
Beyond the core mechanical changes, the Test of Time update also adds several new features. Alexander the Great is being added as a leader, a new Fractal Continent map has been introduced, and there are dedicated Commerce and Advisor Council screens. Balance changes, map generation tweaks, and narrative events have also been updated, contributing to a more polished experience.
